Δηλώσεις του Πρωθυπουργού κ. Αντώνη Σαμαρά και της υπουργού Εμπορίου των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών της Αμερικής κ. Penny Pritzker

O Πρωθυπουργός κ. Αντώνης Σαμαράς συναντήθηκε σήμερα στο Μουσείο της Ακρόπολης με την υπουργό Εμπορίου των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών της Αμερικής κ. Penny Pritzker. Μετά την κατ’ ιδίαν συνάντησή τους, έγιναν οι ακόλουθες δηλώσεις:

Αντώνης Σαμαράς: I am extremely happy to welcome the US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker in the Museum of the Acropolis, the same sacred place where I had the pleasure to welcome Secretary Jack Lew just a few months ago.

Her visit follows the meetings I had in Washington with President Obama in August and with Vice President Biden a month later. 

Your presence here today signals our two administrations’ intention to work closely on a number of issues stretching from American investment in Greece to the Trans Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which will be negotiated in the following months during the EU Greek Presidency.

We are confident that enhanced trade across the Atlantic will benefit growth on both sides as well as on the world economy.

I would like to stress that Greece’s economic stabilization on the areas of fiscal adjustment and reform implementation – structural implementation - is producing tangible results: we are going to have a primary surplus for the first time in many years, a current account surplus and a foreign trade balance for the first time in decades .

These are tangible results and these tangible results, along with the anticipation of Greece entering a period of recovery after six years of a very painful recession, I believe, offer major investment opportunities in our country.

In fact, as we just discussed, there is already a significant investment interest for Greece, which basically reflects two things: The comparative advantages of our country which have been unfortunately “dormant” for many years; and the “first comer’s advantage”, always very significant when a country improves its fiscal stability and its competitiveness profile as is the case of Greece today.

We want to build our long term cooperation on this momentum.

I am confident your presence here today will lead to a new beginning for American investors to come to Greece.

I would like to once again thank you for being here with us.

So welcome again Ms. Secretary.

Penny Pritzker: It is wonderful to be here with you today in Athens, and at the Acropolis no less. Here, we can truly appreciate both the modernity of Athens, which is captured in the beautiful design of this new museum, and the rich history and culture of one of the oldest cities in the world, the birthplace of democracy. This is a very special place.

The United States values its longstanding relationship with Greece and the strong ties between our people. In fact, my hometown of Chicago has one of the most vibrant Greek-American communities in the United States. Just about two years ago the National Hellenic Museum opened its new 40,000-square-foot facility in Chicago's Greek Town. It is a very prominent museum dedicated to chronicling the Greek story, including Greece's contribution to America.

Beyond our historical and cultural ties, Greece has been a strong political ally and military partner. We've worked together through NATO, promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, North Africa, the Western Balkans, and beyond.

Similarly, our commercial and economic ties remain very important – and there is the potential for us to do even more business together in the future. 

President Obama and I know that the Prime Minister has made — and will continue to make — bold and difficult decisions to keep Greece on the path of fiscal and structural reform, all in an effort to promote growth and overall economic prosperity.  This road has been challenging, but progress has been made. Going forward, Greece must not look solely to budget cuts and fiscal tightening, but also to steps that promote growth, jobs, trade, and investment, which will benefit all the citizens of Greece.

Supporting entrepreneurs as well as small and medium-sized businesses is essential to building the economic future of Greece.  Therefore, I applaud the Prime Minister for the Greek Government’s work to clarify laws, reduce unnecessary regulations, and lower costs for businesses.  We have a strong interest in seeing Greece succeed in these efforts. 

Certainly, American companies doing business in Greece can play a role in fostering economic growth. As you move to make the Greek economy more open and competitive, we want to see the presence of American firms here become stronger.

Looking forward, there are many opportunities for our two nations to do more business together.  For example, government procurement plays a substantial role in the Greek economy, and it is often a gateway to attracting more private investment from countries such as the United States.

I believe that the Greek Government can improve its business environment by continuing to increase transparency in public procurements.  Such steps will make it easier for companies to compete in public tenders and thus provide the most cost-effective goods and services in important sectors like energy and health care.

On a broader scale, the United States strongly supports the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.  The second round of talks took place just last week in Brussels.  The Obama Administration looks forward to working with Greece to make progress on T-TIP negotiations next year as Greece assumes the EU Presidency.  I know that we can reach a comprehensive and ambitious agreement that will stimulate economic growth and job creation both in Greece and the United States.

In closing, let me just say that we know that Greece continues to face tough choices.  Greece has made significant strides, but there is more to be done. The Greek people have come too far and gone through too many difficult times to stop these efforts now. 

The United States remains a friend to Greece, and we want to see Greece move forward, prosper, and succeed. 

I look forward to continuing to work with Prime Minister Samaras.  Thank you.

Αντώνης Σαμαράς: Είμαι χαρούμενος που καλωσορίζω σήμερα την Αμερικανίδα υπουργό Εμπορίου Πέννυ Πρίτζκερ, εδώ, στο Μουσείο της Ακρόπολης, στον ίδιο ιερό χώρο όπου είχα τη χαρά να υποδεχθώ πριν μερικούς μήνες τον Αμερικανό υπουργό Τζακ Λιού.

Η επίσκεψη της ακολουθεί τις συναντήσεις που είχα στην Ουάσιγκτον με τον Πρόεδρο Ομπάμα τον περασμένο Αύγουστο και τον Αντιπρόεδρο Μπάϊντεν ένα μήνα αργότερα. 

Η παρουσία σας σήμερα εδώ, σηματοδοτεί την πρόθεση των δύο κυβερνήσεών μας να εργαστούν από κοινού σε μια σειρά θεμάτων, που εκτείνονται από τις Αμερικανικές Επενδύσεις στην Ελλάδα μέχρι τον Διατλαντικό Συνεταιρισμό Εμπορίου και Επενδύσεων (TTIP), που θα είναι αντικείμενο διαπραγματεύσεων Ευρώπης-ΗΠΑ στους επόμενους μήνες, κατά τη διάρκεια της Ελληνικής Προεδρίας.

Είμαστε βέβαιοι ότι η διεύρυνση των εμπορικών συναλλαγών στον Ατλαντικό, θα ωφελήσει και τις δύο πλευρές, καθώς και την παγκόσμια οικονομία. 

Θέλω να υπογραμμίσω  ότι η οικονομική σταθεροποίηση της Ελλάδας, όπως καταγράφεται στους τομείς της δημοσιονομικής προσαρμογής και στην εφαρμογή διαρθρωτικών μεταρρυθμίσεων, παράγει πλέον και χειροπιαστά αποτελέσματα: ένα πρωτογενές πλεόνασμα, για πρώτη φορά εδώ και χρόνια, καθώς κι ένα πλεόνασμα στο ισοζύγιο πληρωμών και μηδενισμό του ελλείμματος στο εμπορικό ισοζύγιο, για πρώτη φορά εδώ και δεκαετίες.

Αυτά τα χειροπιαστά αποτελέσματα, μαζί με την προσδοκία πλέον ότι η Ελλάδα μπαίνει σε περίοδο ανάκαμψης μετά από έξη πολύ οδυνηρά χρόνια ύφεσης, αναδεικνύουν σημαντικές επενδυτικές ευκαιρίες για τη χώρα μας.

Πράγματι, όπως συζητήσαμε ήδη, υπάρχει ήδη αισθητό επενδυτικό ενδιαφέρον για την Ελλάδα, ένα ενδιαφέρον που αντανακλά δύο πράγματα: τα συγκριτικά πλεονεκτήματα της χώρας μας που ήταν «αδρανή» για πολλά χρόνια και το πλεονέκτημα αυτού που προλαβαίνει και τα αξιοποιεί πρώτος, που είναι πάντα πολύ σημαντικό, όταν μια χώρα καταφέρνει να βελτιώσει τη δημοσιονομική της σταθερότητα και το την ανταγωνιστικότητά της, όπως είναι σήμερα η περίπτωση της Ελλάδας.

Θέλουμε να χτίσουμε τη μακροχρόνια συνεργασία μας πάνω σε αυτή τη δυναμική που αναπτύσσεται πλέον.

Και είμαι βέβαιος, ότι η παρουσία σας εδώ, σήμερα θα σηματοδοτήσει μια νέα αρχή για τους αμερικανούς επενδυτές να έλθουν στην Ελλάδα.
